Jordan Marsh (first) opens.

January 20, 1851

Founded by Eben Jordan and Benjamin Marsh, the store sells linens, silks, and other items and is located initially at 129 Milk Street. The store moves to 18 – 20 Pearl Street (second) in 1854 (1856), and expands its selection when it moves to a new building in Winthrop Square (third) in 1859, and to Washington Street (fourth) in 1861. It moves to new buildings on the same site (fifth) in 1880,* (sixth) 1949 – 1957,* and (seventh) 1978.* Incorporates on May 17, 1901, the store becomes known for its blueberry muffins, and, for a time, afternoon in-store concerts. It becomes part of Hahn Department Stores, Inc. in 1928, and Macy’s in 1996.
